Transformer Fire near Mt. Zion

Macon County -- A transformer fire lit up the night sky near Mt. Zion.

It happened near Fuyao Glass Plant.  Flashes of light caught the eyes of a number of people in the area.  Mt. Zion Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Paul Hartwig reported that the explosion was from a large transformer behind the glass plant.

There were no injuries from the fire or the arching of power.

"Ameren was called and shut off power to the substation and Mt. Zion fire extinguished the oil inside the transformer that was still burning.  Power was lost to the plant, but their generators allowed the glass to be maintained in the furnaces creating no safety hazard," said Hartwig.
