NYPA Investigating power plant

Lewiston, NY -- Officials at the New York Power Authority are looking into the cause of a fire at a power generating unit.

The fire occurred near the power authority's public fishing platform on the Niagara River.  It was reported at 1pm on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the power authority said Unit 2 of the power plant was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Fire companies from Niagara and Lewiston responded and extinguished the blaze.  The initial report was an explosion at the unit, which was later determined to not be the case.

There was no report of lost power.  "The plant has continued to function normally throughout the incident.  We're meeting all power requirements - even on a hot day like this."
