Coal Fired Power Plant Catches Fire in Salix, Iowa

Salix, IA Power Plant Catches Fire

SALIX, Iowa | The cause of a small fire that broke out at a MidAmerican Energy Co. coal-fired power plant early Thursday is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

Crews responded to the call about 2:30 a.m. at George Neal South, 2761 Port Neal Circle, four miles west of Salix.

Salix Fire Chief Justin Iverson said the fire was located in a coal dust collector system called a baghouse.

The plant operates 24 hours a day, but Iverson said the flames were not anywhere close to the main complex.

Iverson said the bag filters inside the dust collection unit had minor damage.
