Lower Mount Bethel -- A large engine noise popped in the distance, alarming residents. The noise was Talen Energy's natural gas-fired power plant's transformer failing.

The cause of the failed transformer is unknown.  Todd Martin, company spokesman, said, "The investigation has begun.  We do not at this time know the cause."

The transformer failure triggered a fire.  The fire was contained at 9pm, and fire crews left at 10pm.

No injuries were reported and there is no risk to the public.

"That kind of support is very much needed and appreciated," Martin said.

The transformer was contained within a concrete structure, which contained the fire.

The plant is currently in a "safe shut down" mode and won't return to normal for a few weeks.
