SUTTON Bridge Power Station was evacuated today after fire broke out following an electrical short circuit.

Fire crews from Long Sutton, Spalding, West Walton and Kings Lynn arrived to find the blaze already extinguished.

A spokesman for Lincs fire service said crews left just before 2pm after having carried out a full inspection.

The spokesman said the caused damage to an electrical transformer. The metal surrounds of the transformer had been subjected to heat. The transformer was sited within a temporary building inside a compound at the plant.

The plant in Centenary Way was built in 1999 and until Christmas was owned by EDF who announced its sale to a group of investors led by an Australian bank.

It produces around two per cent of the electricity requirement of this country.
