Houston, TX -- A power outage caused Houston residents to falsely report a chemical plant explosion.
At 12:30am, a power outage occurred at the Lyondell-Basell plant that caused some to report an explosion. The cause of the confusion was the procedures that the chemical plant went through in the event of a power outage.
The chemical plant kicked into emergency mode. It released trapped gas, which burned off in the smokestacks. The burned off gas created large flames and smoke. The back up systems created loud noises that could mimic the sounds of explosions.
Power was restored two hours later.
