DTE to Replace Coal fired Power Plant with Natural Gas

China Township, MI -- DTE Energy announced that they will be spending $1 billion to $1.5 billion on a new natural gas power plant.

The gas turbines will generate 1,000 megawatts of electricity.  This will power 850,000 homes in Michigan.  The plant will be right next to the former Belle River Power Plant that caught fire and was destroyed.  This will supply jobs for those who lost theirs in the fire.

This will help the local economy in a number of ways.

1)  It protects local jobs

2)  It provides new jobs

3)  It brings in a new tax base

As a bonus, DTE moved from coal-power to natural gas, which is a cleaner burning fuel.  The plant that it is replacing was in the top 100 plants emitting greenhouse gases.
