Mataura fire crews were called to a fire at the Dongwha Patinna medium-density fibreboard plant during the early hours of this morning.
A fire communications spokesman said two appliances from Mataura went to the plant about 1.45am.
It was reported there was a ''decent'' sized fire in the press, he said.
Dongwha Patinna staff had the fire under control when crews arrived, he said. However, firefighters remained on scene to dampen down hot spots.
It is the second fire in less than a week at the plant, located on State Highway 1 south of Mataura. Last Wednesday, Mataura, Gore and Edendale fire crews were also called to a fire in the press.
Dongwha Patinna operations manager Simon Callaghan said last week the cause of the fire in the plant's press would be investigated by the company.
He said all fires on site had the potential to become serious because of the material used in the manufacturing process. However, the company had good systems to deal with potential fires that included automated and human response mechanisms.
