Internal firefighters battled a Monday afternoon fire at Motiva Enterprises' Convent Crude Oil Refinery in St. James Parish.  It took 45 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The blaze began in a processing unit.   The refinery is currently undergoing routine maintenance, but it was reported that the fire was not related to the work.  The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.

St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin Jr. said the fire was reportedly, "a pretty good-sized fire."  Refinery officials described it as a "flash fire."

No one was injured.  Fire sprinklers and other protection measures were not reported.
