The Drake Power Plant in Colorado Springs has been inoperable since May 5th when a fire took place. Since then, they have been supplementing energy generation through other power plants.
The replacement electricity is costing Drake Power Plant $3 million a month. That number could go up if the cost of natural gas goes up in the summer. The cost of the replacement electricity will be going directly to the consumer, raising utility costs 7.4% for residents and 10.5-11.2% a month for businesses.
"Until Springs Utilities concludes the assesment of the Drake Power Plant and the damage incurred there, there's really no definitive time frame at this point to tell you how long that plant will be unavailable to generate coal fired power," said Springs Utilities Rate Manager Sonya Thieme.
