Major Fire at Gas-fired Power Station

plant fire protectionOxfordshire, England --A fire ignited at Didcot Power Station (a gas-fired power plant) near Oxfordshire, sending 20 fire appliances to the scene.

Police are warning nearby residents to stay inside, and keep windows and doors shut.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey said, "First, I want to thank emergency services.  I will be keeping in touch with the relevant authorities throughout.  My priority is to understand the cause of the fire and get the affected unit back generating electricity as soon as it's safe to do so."

There were 60 firefighters on the scene with hydraulic platforms to get the height needed to fight the fire.

It's too early to determine the cause of the fire.
