plant fire protection contractorA fire at the Canada Bread Plant in Hamilton caused a temporary shut down and $500,000 in damages.

The blaze was discovered at 5:30pm by employees passing by in vehicles.  The fire was started in a transformer and caused by an electrical malfunction.  A second transformer was also damaged.

When fire crews arrived, they found a smokey scene and plumes rising from the transformer.  The blaze was knocked out in 45 minutes; however, crews stayed behind to work on hot spots for 30 more minutes.

The plant won't resume operations until the electrical system is repaired.
