Pittsburgh, PA -- An explosion destroyed a steam turbine generator at Delta Energy Center.
Firefighters got a call at 3:43pm reporting the fire involving hydrogen cooling system of a steam turbine. When firefighters arrived, they found a lubrication oil fire that was being snuffed out by power plant staff. The power plant staff purged the hydrogen and carbon dioxide from the sysem, starving the gas. It took approximately 2 hours to snuff it out completely.
Fire Marshal Robert Marshall said, "One end of the generator was destroyed in the fire, mostly because of the initial explosion of the hydrogen gas. There was concern about the gear lubrication oil going into a storm drain near there, but we were able to boom that and no oil made it down to the river."
