Bhopal, India -- A major fire engulfed a 120MW thermal power plant unit in India over the weekend. The unit has been badly damaged, but luckily, no one was injured.
Plant officials are considering phasing out the unit rather than repairing it. The unit is old and the cost to repair it may not be worth it.
"The fire broke out at 12:20am and efforts to control the fire began as soon as it was detected. The fire has caused a lot of damage and if repairing works are done, it will take not less than three to four months to make the unit functional," said Chief Engineer DN Ram.
The plant has a 450 MW capacity with three units, two at 120 MW (including the damaged unit) and one at 210 MW.
