plant explosionMoss Point, MS -- OSHA is fining four companies involved in an explosion at a fish plant, Omega Protein.  The explosion killed one person and injured another.

OSHA is fining four companies a total of $187,620.  Two temporary workers were welding pipe near a storage tank containing explosive methane and hydrogen sulfide gases.  The welding caused an explosion that killed one worker and injured the other.  OSHA is fining the companies because the temporary workers had no training, resulting in the explosion.

"The Omega Protein Plant explosion shines a spotlight on how critical it is for employers to verify, isolate, and remove fire and explosion hazards in employee work areas," said Eugene Stewart, OSHA area director.

Thirteen citations were issued to Omega Protein for willful, repeated, and serious safety violations.
