Southport -- Dust collection ignited a fire at the Southport Power Plant Tuesday morning.
At 3:43am, fire crews were called to the power plant when a fire ignited on an outdoor conveyor belt that moves wood chips.
"When the chips are delivered, there's a conveyor belt and a hopper that collects the wood particles and apparently the friction from the belt caused some of the dust to ignite," Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said.
The blaze is estimated to have caused $50k in damage to the plant. The plant will be out of operation for several days, but will continue to generate power.
A firefighter was injured during the firefight.
