plant fire protectionAdams County -- Thousands of residents are under mandatory water restrictions after a fire that destroyed a fertilizer plant contaminated the drinking water.

New Oxford residents needed to get their water from York County after public safety officials discovered the water supply had become contaminated after a fire destroyed the Miller Chemical and Fertilizer Plant.  They found traces of herbicides, pesticides, and other substances in the water.

The water was shut down in advance for the fear of water contamination from the run-off water used to battle the fire.  No one will have access to contaminated water.

"There is no contamination getting into the water system," said John Repetz, spokesman for the Department of Environmental Protection.
