Tennessee Valley Authority, data center, coal-fired power plantGoogle is working with the Tennessee Valley Authority to convert a coal-fired power plant into a renewable energy data center in Alabama.

The coal-fired power plant is closing in October and Google will be building a $600 million server farm on 350 acres of land that is planned to be powered by 100% renewable energy.  Google will tap into the transformers, power lines, and other equipment for their clean energy.

The site was chosen due to its proximity to the river - to cool the servers - and its location near a NASA research center (talented local work force).

Construction on the data center is set for 2016.
