NRC Approves Indian Point's Response to Transformer Fire | F.E. Moran Special Hazard Systems

Buchanan, NY -- Federal regulators at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) have deemed the fire response at Indian Point acceptable.

A transformer fire on May 9 caused a forced outage that shut down the Unit 3 Reactor for 16 days (F.E. Moran Special Hazard Systems was hired to bring it back online - look for the case study soon!).

The Journal News says the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced its findings on the fire response and transformer replacement.  It was determined that faulty insulation caused an explosion and fire.

NRC inspectors included the response of the fire brigade's performance, proper use of breathing apparatus, layout of fire hoses, command effectiveness, and emergency plan implementation in their assessment.  The NRC determined that everything was acceptable.
