Waldwick, NJ -- Hundreds of utility customers in Bergen County lost power on Sunday when a massive fire started from an equipment failure.  The fire sent thick plumes of smoke into the air.

Residents could hear an explosion and felt their homes shaking.  "It was like an explosion, a big 'bang, bang.' the house shook.  It was crazy," said local resident.  He described flames shooting into the air and billowing smoke.  "And it was just billowing all the way up."

Another resident, Tracee Carrasco, said, "All of the sudden you hear like shots, and I was scared."

Forty homes in the area were evacuated.  Other residents in the area were ordered to stay in their homes with windows closed.

Firefighters were rushed into the area to battle the fire.  The fire went on for hours.  Firefighters used foam to extinguish the fire.

One fire was injured.
