Transformer Fire Shuts Down Nuclear Power Plant | F.E. Moran Special Hazard Systems

South Carolina -- A transformer at a nuclear plant caught fire on Sunday night, shutting down the unit.

The fire burned for 30 minutes while firefighters attacked it and quickly extinguished the fire.  No nuclear material was released.

Unit 1 of the Oconee Nuclear Station was shut down as a precaution.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire did not require evacuations.  There was no threat to public safety.  The plant is owned by Duke Energy.  They will classify the fire as "an unusual event."  That is the lowest classification of emergency at a nuclear station.
