Saudi Arabia -- A fire broke out at a chemical plant in Saudi Arabia this weekend, claiming 12 lives and leaving 11 injured.
The fire started during a maintenance operation at the plant when 23 people were working at the plant. The maintenance contractors were replacing catalysts when the incident began. When the fire ignited, thick, black smoke spread quickly, prohibiting employees from evacuating. Chemicals inside the plant burned and produced toxic gases that suffocated those present.
Five of the eleven injured employees are now stable. Six others are in critical condition.
Fire crews quickly arrived and extinguished the fire within 10 minutes.
