An Edmonton firefighter was injured while fighting a coal silo fire at a cement plant this week.

Crews were called to the scene on Tuesday morning when a coal silo ignited.  The fight continued for hours and EMS needed to be called to transport five firefighters to local hospitals.  One firefighter had serious injuries and was kept overnight.

Edmonton Fire Rescue spokeswoman Shani Gwin did report that the technical rescue team needed to respond to the fire, but she could not go into detail about the injuries sustained.

Four of the firefighters taken to the hospital were released Tuesday while the fifth firefighter remained in the hospital until Wednesday.
