Brooklyn, NY -- Con Edison announced on Monday, June 15, that it will be offering solar panels on 300 roofs in Brooklyn and Queens to create a virtual power plant.
The series of rooftop solar panels will generate 1.8 MW and hold 4MW hours of battery storage. ConEd is planning on adding software that will distribute the solar power. Residential customers will be able to lease for a monthly fee the solar panels and lithium-ion battery system. This will act as a back-up to power.
ConEd's customers are already beginning to install their own solar power, which has forced ConEd to adapt. In 2014, New Yorkers installed more residential solar panels than in all other years combined.
