Des Moines, IA -- Three oil pipeline construction sites have had machinery extensively damaged by fire.
Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty says that the fires look intentional. They were set along the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The fires were set, damaging bulldozers and other heavy machinery at the estimated cost of $1 million.
The sheriff's office was alerted around 6am on Monday when a fire was seen at a field near a construction site. Investigators then learned about additional burned equipment at pipeline sites.
This pipeline crosses 18 counties in Iowa and has received some backlash from environmental and landowner groups.
