How Nets Save the Lives of Construction Workers

The number 1 cause of death at a construction site is falling.  With the use of common playground equipment, construction workers could be much safer.

Fall personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to keep construction workers safe.  At some point, most workers will work at an elevation.  The longer that they do, the more comfortable that they will get.  That means they will be less likely to wear their PPE.  They become overconfident.  If a worker fails to properly secure his or her PPE and/or the PPE fails, a safety net is the only means of defense.

Safety Nets in Construction

Protection Equipment

Netting is extremely important for safety in the construction industry.  Fall protection is required when a worker is working above 6 feet in the air.  Safety equipment can include fall arrest systems, guardrails, and netting.  Netting is the final safety measure.  If other fall safety equipment fails, the net is there to save a life.

Building Wrapping with Nets

Another use for netting in the construction field is wrapping buildings that are under construction.  The netting prevents debris from falling on workers or pedestrians.  Falling hammers, debris, wood, steel, and concrete have killed pedestrians before.  In 2015, a 37-year old NYC woman was killed while talking on her cell phone and walking down the street when flying construction debris hit her.  In 2009, a three year old girl was killed when construction materials fell off a high-rise in Canada.  In 2015, the New York Post wrote an article about the rise of pedestrian injuries from construction debris in New York.  The use of netting would have prevented these injuries and deaths.

The use of netting in the construction industry will not only keep workers safe from falls, but will prevent injuries and death from falling construction debris and tools.
