Firefighters still dousing two-day-old warehouse fire near ship channel

Chron - Mike Morris

Firefighters on Monday still were dousing hotspots and removing debris from the site of a four-alarm warehouse fire that started Saturday near the Houston Ship Channel, according to the Cloverleaf Volunteer Fire Department.

Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion after a chemical warehouse owned by Texas Distribution Services Inc., 13609 Industrial Road, caught fire shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported, and the blaze was under control Saturday, according to the Houston Fire Department.

Cloverleaf Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Doug Clough said his department is working with employees at the business to use heavy equipment to dig through debris and reach areas that still are smoldering.

Clough said he expects the fire to be fully extinguished by Monday afternoon. Portions of the warehouse collapsed, he said, but part of the structure still is intact.

The materials burned in the fire were dry goods, he said, none of which were toxic; air quality personnel monitored within a 5-mile radius and found no problems.

Kelly McQueen of the Harris County Fire Marshal's office said he expects to complete a final walk-through of the site Tuesday afternoon. No foul play is suspected, he said.

Texas Distribution Services is an export packaging company that specializes in worldwide shipping.
