Fire at Wisconsin Transit Center Extinguished by Sprinklers

Fire at Manitowac, WI Transit Center Extinguished by Fire Sprinklers

MANITOWOC - Firefighters fought a blaze at Manitowoc's new bus transit center Sunday afternoon.

Fire Chief Bill Manis said crews were called to Maritime Metro around 2:00 for an activated fire alarm.

When firefighters arrived, two fire sprinkler heads were actively spraying water over a fire just outside the building's main entrance.

Manis said the blaze shows the importance of installing fire sprinkler systems. The fire got big enough and hot enough to activate two sprinkler heads.

According to Manis, if the building did not have a fire sprinkler system, there would have been significant damage to the roof and possibly the building.

The fire remains under investigation as police and fire officials review the video surveillance system.
