COAL CITY, Ill. (CBS) – Firefighters have been working early Thursday to put out an extra-alarm blaze at a warehouse building in far southwest suburban Grundy County.
Crews have been on the scene of the fire at 236 E. Oak St. in Coal City, just west of Interstate 55, since around midnight. The building housed at least two businesses, including one that manufactured drainage tiles.
Much of the building has collapsed in the flames, and firefighters were hampered somewhat because there was no water supply close to the building, so water had to be hauled in with portable tanks fed by tanker trucks that were filling up from the Kankakee River a few blocks away.
As of 6:30 a.m., the fire was still burning, and crews were still putting out flames.
