A fire on Sand Island destroyed part of a warehouse, but fire officials say it could have been much worse.

Honolulu firefighters were called to the blaze near the warehouses off Sand Island Access Road shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to officials, the fire started outside, burning a stack of pallets, then spread to the building.

“There is a sprinkler system that activated and controlled the fire. Prevent it from doing any further damage in the interior,” Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig said.

Officials say the sprinkler system helped save most of the contents of the building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
