fire sprinklers for dorms

New York -- A fire at State University of New York (SUNY) at Purchase College has brought fire sprinkler requirements for dorms back into the news.

Right now, there is no requirement for dorms to be retrofitted unless they have had extensive renovations.  However, a fire in a dorm at SUNY has leaders questioning whether all college dorms should have automatic fire sprinklers.

The fire was a four-alarm and it broke out over Labor Day.  Over a dozen students had to find temporary housing and their belongings were completely destroyed.  The dorm had no fire sprinklers.

According to NFPA, dorm fires have risen 70% since 1983.  It went from 2,490 to 4,230 (2014).  Students are living away from home for the first time and may make mistakes cooking, dispensing of smoking materials, or overloading electrical outlets.
