On April 9, 2012, two firefighters were killed when they were fighting a five-alarm fire that broke out in an abandoned six-story hosiery warehouse in a Philadelphia suburb. The fire took over more than half of a city block and killed Lt. Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeney of the Fire Department's Ladder 10 station.
Denny O'Brien, City Councilman for Philadelphia, is introducing a bill to amend the Fire Code and establish new requirements for inventorying, inspecting, evaluating, and marking abandoned and vacant building with placards, according to fireengineering.com.
O'Brien says, "This [bill] stabilizes communities that are at risk, psychologically and from an infrastructure standpoint. This will protect firefighters and first alarmers."
