On Sunday, February 9th, an early morning fire affected an area of downtown Mt. Prospect.  A Japanese restaurant was completely gutted.  Residents who lived in apartments above the restaurant were displaced due to severe smoke damage.  Close by businesses - a realty company, Chamber of Commerce office, and a bakery - were temporarily closed because of water damage and a fire-related power outage.

Firefighters responded at 4am to the two-story mixed use building.  With the priority of protecting people first, they made sure all residents were evacuated.  Shortly after, they went to the basement, where heavy smoke and massive flames awaited.  The flames were so intense, they had to evacuate the basement and begin a defensive approach.

No injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and there is no report on fire protection within the building.  These questions should be answered soon.
