The University Tower building in New Haven, CT had a fire last Wednesday that resulted in the death of a 63 year old man.

The building had added medical businesses on the first three floors, which required fire sprinklers.  The rest of the 17-story building was built before the fire sprinkler law and was grandfathered in.

The victim lived on the sixth floor.  When firefighters arrived, the victim was on his balcony, but panicked and went back inside.  When firefighters got into his unit, he had to be carried out.  He died from smoke inhalation.

Two residents and two firefighters were also injured and taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
