Dayton, OH -- Stivers High School for the Arts is closed today when a fire ignited in the building around 3am this morning.

When crews arrived, smoke was billowing from the building.  The fire started in the Proper Room near the school's theater.

Firefighters had difficulty navigating the building because black smoke consumed the building.  Staff met with firefighters to help them learn the layout.

There is a lot of damage from smoke and water.  The District Chief said that it is not safe for students to go in the building at this time.  Crews are pumping water from the school and ventilating the building.  Efforts are being made to get students back to school by Thursday.

Fire sprinklers were installed and did help contain the fire.
