Chicago, IL -- Four children were killed in a Chicago apartment fire when fire protection was not working properly, resulting in a slow response and exit.
The fire started on the second floor of an 18-unit apartment building today at 3:30am. There is no word on the cause of the fire. However, it appears that the lack of operating smoke detectors is partially to blame for the deaths. If the family had adequate notice, they would have had a better opportunity to escape.
Two girls were found in a closet, with the older girl shielding the younger girl. Two boys were found in a bedroom. The parents of the children are in critical condition. They jumped from a window to escape the flames.
Neighbor Albert Miller said, "I just feel like if everything was taken care of properly in this building, there would have never been a problem like this."
