off-campus student housing fire protectionHartford, CT -- Senator Joseph Crisco Jr., D - Woodridge and Rob Kane, R-Watertown, have testified in favor of a legislation that would require landlords to notify tenants if there are operative sprinkler systems in their housing units.

The bill came from Woodridge resident, Jeffrey Block, who lost his daughter Eva Ryan Block, 21, in an off-campus fire while attending Marist College.

"Too often we see news reports of fires in dwellings which result in the loss of life.  As legislators, we must take every step we can to prevent such tragedies.  Requiring that landlords notify their tenants about whether there is an operative sprinkler system in their unit is one such step," said Crisco.

Eva's mother, Barbara Block, told people the importance of an escape plan.  She explained that having a plan will eliminate panic if a fire occured.

Three people were in the fire that killed Eva and four people escaped.
