Hillsboro, OR -- A fire at a tool company ignited when sparks from grinding operations near a dust filtration unit caused the combustible particles to ignite.
A total of 120 employees were evacuated.
Fire damage extended from the exhaust duct of the dust unit and then spread throughout the warehouse. The smoke activated a single sprinkler head on the roof of the building.
When fire crews arrived, employees were already evacuated. Smoke was coming from the rear doors of the production area, firefighters reported.
Water was not used on the fire because it would react with the metal particles and spread the fire more quickly. Instead, firefighters used dry-chemical with combustible metal extinguishers.
The fire was extinguished in 11 minutes and no one was hurt.
