Myrtle Beach Fire Department Credits Fire Sprinklers for Saving Family

Myrtle Beach, NC -- Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue is crediting a home fire sprinkler for saving not only the family, but possibly the neighborhood.

Lt. Jonathan Evans said that a family member was cooking when oil started fire.  Luckily, the home was equipped with fire sprinklers.  Evans said that the fire sprinklers extinguished the fire before firefighters could even arrive.

"First off, the sprinkler system is already in your home, so it goes off, it's going to be a lot easier for it to put out the fire than us.  Sometimes it takes us a little bit longer to get to you, get the hoses off and all that stuff.  Plus, the amount of water it puts out - it puts out about 20 gallons of water a minute compared to the 250 or 300 gallons per minute that we put out, so on top of the fire damage you already have, by the time we get there, that water damage is going to be that much more because we want to make sure that fire is out," said Evans.

Evans says if you can't afford to install fire sprinklers, at least have a fire extinguisher or install Stovetop Firestop to prevent cooking fires from getting out of control.
