Lansing, MI -- Police in Michigan have arrested a driver who intentionally struck and killed a firefighter who was collecting money for charity.

Dennis Rodeman worked for the fire department for seven years, recently got married, and was expecting his first child when he died on Wednesday.  Rodeman also served in the U.S. Marines in Iraq.

"This is a shocking and unthinkable tragedy...Dennis was cut down in an instant, doing what he loved, what he believed in, what he believed in most:  helping other people," said Mayor Virg Bernero.

The incident was proceeded by a traffic altercation.  "The suspect came by, was upset for whatever reason [and] circled back around" before stricking Rodeman, explained Police Chief Jim Fraus.  "The preliminary investigation is that he deliberately hit the firefighter."

Rodeman was wearing a reflective vest and other protective gear as he stood in the road collecting for charity.

A witness, Tionna Davis said she saw the truck swerve from one lane to another to strike Rodeman.  "He literally tried to hit him," she said.

The suspect fled the scene in his truck before ditching his truck to flee on foot.
