Fire Protection for Data Centers

data center fire protection

Nearly every company needs a data room.  With most companies reducing their paper consumption, a lot of company files are stored in data rooms.  If a fire were to occur, millions of dollars in business could be lost.

Data rooms hold critical company information and have several fire risks.  The worst part, unless it's required in their state, many data rooms are unprotected.  Think about when the Amazon Cloud went down.  It was for only 4 hours.  It was only a typo that could easily be fixed (not a fire that would cause irreversable damage).  In that short time, the S&P 500 companies lost approximately $150 million.

Now, water isn't great for data centers either.  You don't want an accidental sprinkler discharge to damage the equipment.  What do you do?  You use inert gas fire sprinklers.

Inert gases are naturally present in the atmosphere, and don't harm the environment and are non-toxic.  Inert gas suppression spreads a gas blend of argon, nitrogen, and helium that removes oxygen from the room.  This removes one element of the fire triangle (ignition source, fuel, oxygen) and the fire goes out.

People need oxygen, obviously, so personnel should exit the area.
