Some Chicago High-rise Owners Yet to Make Fire Safety Upgrades

Chicago, IL -- Chicago has 716 high-rises that were built before 1975.  They were required to make fire safety upgrades by 2015.  Well, it is now 2016 and 176 of those buildings have not yet made the upgrades.

As many as 303 of the 716 high-rises say they have completed the upgrades, but haven't had their inspection yet.

In 2004, Chicago set a deadline of 2012 for buildings to complete the work.  When 2012 came and went, so many buildings missed the deadline that they extended it to 2015.  In 2015, Mayor Raum Emanual said, "This is not like a final exam where you wait until the last hour of the last day to figure this out.  I expect you to use this time to ut in place a sprinkler systen abd the safety and security you need....I don't expect you to use the time all the way to the end."

Well... 176 of those buildings did.
