Elgin, IL -- A fire sprinkler activated when a fire ignited at an Elgin auto dealership over the weekend.
The fire ignited at an auto dealership and fire crews arrived at 7:20pm to find flames visible on the roof. Police and fire units couldn't immediately get to the fire because security gates kept them out.
It took about forty minutes to bring the fire under control. Luckily, the fire was limited to the heating unit in the shop, a spray booth, and part of the roof. The fire sprinkler was able to contain the fire to this area.
Total damage is estimated at $40,000, much less than what would have been the fire damage had it spread to the show room or other parts of the dealership.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
