Chicago, IL -- In the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, a fire broke out on Wednesday morning in a mixed use space grocery store and apartment building.

Neighbors said they heard explosions and saw flames shooting from the windows of the second floor around 1am.  Fire crews arrived and immediately began searching for people.  They found a 74 year old man and 72 year old woman.  Both victims were taken to the Norwegian American Hospital where the woman died and the man was in critical condition.

Seven people were displaced from the fire.

The apartment did not have fire sprinklers.  Some of the apartments in the building had smoke detectors, but not the apartment that had been the fire ignition source.

The explosion was so loud, a neighbor, Parrish Daniels, 49, thought it was gunfire.  He went outside and saw the flames and fire crews pulling the victims from the home.

"They're some brave people," said Daniels.  "That was not a fire extinguisher fire out there."
