New Delhi -- A massive fire gutted New Delhi's Museum of Natural History.  It destroyed six floors and countless artifacts.

The building houses the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).  The Museum of Natural History rents space from them to house their museum.

India's Minister of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar visited the site after the fire, which started at 2am on Tuesday.  "This is tragic, the Natural History Museum is a national treasure...the loss cannot be counted in rupees," he said, of the disaster.  He ordered a fire and energy audit on all ministry buildings.

This museum is the first and only natural history museum in all of India.  They display a flora and fauna collection and several fossils.  They also house a reference library for scholars that has over 15,000 books.

Over 110 firefighters were at the scene to fight the blaze.  Of the 110, 6 were injured and sent to the hospital.  All are said to be in stable condition.
