American Airlines

Project Showcase: F.E. Moran’s Fire Protection & Utility Infrastructure at American Airlines Hangar 2

Engineering Fire Safety & Infrastructure for One of the Largest Airline Hangars in the U.S.

When American Airlines set out to construct Hangar 2, a 160,000-square-foot aircraft maintenance facility with an additional 35,000 square feet of support space, they needed a fire protection and utility infrastructure partner capable of handling the demands of one of the most expansive and technologically advanced hangars in the nation.

‍

With 7,000 tons of structural steel forming the longest full steel truss span of any hangar in the U.S., this facility required uncompromising safety solutions—a challenge that F.E. Moran tackled with precision engineering, advanced fire suppression, and underground utility installation expertise.

Project Scope: A Comprehensive Fire Protection & Utility System

Given the sheer size and complexity of the facility, F.E. Moran provided a full-scale fire protection system and critical underground utilities, ensuring safety and efficiency in aircraft maintenance operations.

‍

Fire Protection System

  • Installation of 26 foam generators, designed to suppress fuel fires and prevent catastrophic fire spread within the hangar.
  • 35 pre-action sprinkler systems, strategically placed to provide immediate fire suppression without accidental discharge.
  • Customized fire suppression strategies tailored to the unique hazards of aircraft maintenance, ensuring compliance with aviation safety regulations.

‍

Underground Utility Infrastructure

  • 200,000 linear feet of underground utilities, supporting essential mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems for the hangar.
  • Integration of infrastructure systems, designed to sustain long-term operations and maintenance efficiency.

Aviation Safety & Engineering Innovation

The American Airlines Hangar 2 project represents a major milestone in aviation infrastructure, combining engineering innovation, fire safety, and large-scale construction expertise. The longest full steel truss span for any U.S. hangar required a customized fire protection approach, ensuring that fuel spills, electrical hazards, and operational risks were mitigated with the highest level of precision and control.

‍

With aircraft maintenance facilities requiring strict fire suppression compliance, F.E. Moran’s team delivered a fully integrated system that not only meets but exceeds FAA and NFPA fire safety standards.

Why Aviation Leaders Trust F.E. Moran

For a facility of this magnitude, fire safety and infrastructure reliability are non-negotiable. F.E. Moran’s expertise in large-scale fire suppression and utility engineering ensures that aviation facilities like Hangar 2 operate safely, efficiently, and with minimal risk.

‍

With a track record of delivering innovative fire protection and mechanical systems for critical infrastructure, F.E. Moran remains the preferred partner for aviation, aerospace, and industrial projects nationwide.
