Construction Worker Killed in Trench Collapse
Lexington, KY -- A construction worker was killed when a trench collapsed during a construction project in Kentucky.
The victim was Samuel Tyler Williams, 22, of Frenchburg. He was working in a 16-foot trench when it collapsed, completely covering him in dirt. At 9:40am, Assistant Fire Chief Harold Hoskins said that emergency workers arrived to free him.
Williams, who was a married father of three died of asphyxiation.
The fire department announced that the investigation is being turned over to OSHA. Investigators are looking into the soil and structure of the trench to ensure that another collapse does not happen.
The trench appeared to be between a retaining wall and the pavement.
"The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet extends our sincere thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and co-workers of the employee. Safety personnel from HYTC District 7 office in Lexington were on the scene immediately after being notified. A preliminary investigation is under way," said Natasha Lacy, Spokeswoman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
