Construction Industry Engages in Stand-downs for Safety

Last month, safety stand-downs were held throughout the Chicago area. OSHA partnered with the Builders Association, Construction Safety Council, the Chicago Area Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education Trust, construction contractors, and other safety and health organizations to hold the events. Earlier this month, a voluntary Falls in Construction stand-down was planned for other areas of the country.
The campaign targets workers and employers through its plan, provide, and train effort:
- Plan means preparing to do the job safely. Employers are instructed to decide how the job will be done, determine the tasks involved, and identify the safety equipment that will be needed. For example, in a roofing job, employers should think about fall hazards such as holes and leading edges and select fall protection suitable to that work.
- Provide refers to ensuring the right equipment is available such as the appropriate ladders, scaffolds, and safety gear.
- Training should be provided to everyone so workers understand proper set-ups and safe use of equipment. Employers should also train workers on hazard recognition and in the care and safe use of equipment the workers will be using.
